Health and Awareness

Gram Sathi believes that access to basic healthcare and health information is essential for building healthy, resilient, and empowered communities. In rural and remote areas, communities often face significant barriers in accessing timely healthcare due to geographical distance, limited medical infrastructure, financial constraints, and lack of awareness about preventive healthcare practices. Women, children, elderly persons, and economically vulnerable families are particularly affected by these challenges.

To address these gaps, Gram Sathi implemented a Free Health Check-up and Health Awareness Initiative in Dumka District, Jharkhand, with support from Arohan Financial Services Limited and Aavishkaar Foundation. The initiative was designed to bring essential healthcare services closer to underserved rural communities while simultaneously promoting awareness about preventive healthcare, nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, and healthy lifestyle practices.

Free Health Check-up Camps — Dumka District, Jharkhand

As part of the initiative, Gram Sathi organized more than 50 Free Health Check-up Camps, reaching more than 5,000 community members across rural locations of Dumka, including communities in Jarmundi and Ramgarh Blocks. The camps provided an accessible platform for people who otherwise faced difficulties in reaching healthcare facilities and seeking timely medical consultation.

The health camps offered free medical consultations, basic health screenings, diagnosis of common health concerns, distribution of essential medicines, nutritional guidance, and referrals for cases requiring further medical attention. Qualified healthcare professionals attended to community members and provided individualized consultation based on their health needs.

Common Health Concerns Identified

  • Anemia
  • Respiratory infections
  • Seasonal illnesses
  • Skin infections
  • Digestive problems
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Hypertension
  • Asthma
  • High blood sugar

Special attention was given to women, children, and elderly persons, who often experience greater challenges in accessing regular healthcare services. The initiative also supported the early identification of health concerns and facilitated referrals to appropriate healthcare facilities wherever advanced diagnosis or treatment was required.

Health Awareness & Wall Writing Campaign

Health awareness was an equally important component of the intervention. Alongside medical services, community members received information on personal hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, anemia prevention, respiratory health, management of chronic diseases, regular health check-ups, and preventive healthcare practices. These awareness efforts aimed to encourage individuals and families to take proactive steps towards maintaining their health and seeking medical support at an early stage.

To extend the impact of the programme beyond the health camps, Gram Sathi also conducted a large-scale Wall Writing Campaign across rural communities in Dumka. More than 200 wall writings were undertaken to spread important health-related messages and create continuous awareness at the community level. The wall writings served as a visible and accessible medium for reinforcing messages related to health, hygiene, preventive care, and community well-being.

Under the Free Health Check-up and Health Awareness Initiative in Dumka District, Jharkhand, Gram Sathi has achieved the following:

50+ Free Health Check-up Camps

Community Health Development Program

Gram Sathi plans to reach out to 3,000 children including their caregivers across 10,000 families in 2 States of India with the ultimate aim to help them rebuild their lives and communities. Depending on the specific requirements, Gram Sathi is extending recovery assistance to prevent further damage and loss, repair essential services, protect health, provide psychosocial support, restore livelihoods, and enhance food security.

Ensure safe and protected environment for children who have parents/families suffering/lost lives due to COVID-19 under our short-term and long-term stay programmes, also by reaching out to provide dry ration supplies for 3 months to vulnerable families in communities. Our approach emerges towards building awareness and bringing out behavioural change — extend much needed psychosocial and technological support to overcome this crisis and promising work towards linking families with State and Centre sponsored welfare schemes, also towards rebuilding lives through livelihood assistance.

Health Program at Mohanpur Block, Deoghar District (2015-16)

Gram Sathi is sincere to ensure safer health for the poor people by imparting them regular health information. In 2015-16, the program continued with the same intensity by Gram Sathi. Different programs like meetings, training, and workshops were regularly organized by Gram Sathi covering 10 villages of the Mohanpur block in Deoghar district in Jharkhand. Under the program, training to the members of the village health-sanitation-nutrition committees and Sahiyas were also provided which helped them to improve their knowledge on NRHM.

Our Approach to Health & Awareness

The initiative demonstrated the importance of bringing healthcare services directly to rural communities rather than expecting vulnerable populations to overcome geographical and financial barriers to access basic medical care. By combining free health services with awareness generation and community outreach, Gram Sathi adopted a holistic approach that addressed both immediate health concerns and long-term preventive health practices.

Through such interventions, Gram Sathi continues to work towards strengthening community health awareness and improving access to essential healthcare services for underserved populations. The organization remains committed to promoting a culture where communities are better informed, health-conscious, and empowered to take timely action for their own well-being.
